Your donation will help to preserve and protect:
The Somerville Historical Society was founded in 1897 and the material donations of its early members form the basis of the Museum's collection today. In 1986 the name was legally changed to the Somerville Museum to reflect a new mission to support and promote local artists and culture as well as Somerville history.
Note that Historic Somerville, Inc. is a completely separate nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation, research, and promotion of all things related to Somerville history. This could include oral histories, raising funds for conservation of the City's Milk Row Cemetery, and buying costumes for historic re-enactments. The third leg of the stool of local historic preservation is the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission. This municipal organization seeks to preserve historically significant buildings throughout the City and is involved with the establishment of protected historic districts. Together the Somerville Museum, Historic Somerville and the SHPC work to create strong support for Somerville's rich history.
